Abstract The fundamental feature of the Borealis' proprietary Borstar® technology is its dual reactor operation, which allows the production of broad (MWD) materials within a wide range of densities and molecular weights. The innovative reactor configuration also makes it possible to produce bimodal LLDPE resins. The flexibility in product design of the Borstar technology has yielded several unique LLDPE products. These products combine outstanding processing properties with enhanced physical properties. Blown film stiffness is becoming increasingly important for the packaging industry due to the need for higher efficiency combined with thinner film substrates. These needs have been adopted in the development of a unique LLDPE product with medium density, which combine the increased stiffness with surprisingly high impact and toughness. For manufacturers who are sensitive to pressure built up in the film extruder, a bimodal resin with superior flow properties has also been developed. In this presentation the design of Borstar polymer resins, with a special emphasis on the use of rheology, will be described. The improved processability will also be discussed, together with an evaluation of the mechanical properties.
